Jusqu'à sa disparition le 30 octobre 2013 à New York, Frank Wess est resté actif tant sur scène que dans les studios d'enregistrement. Cette présence continue peut étonner car il était de deux ans le cadet de Charlie Parker. Il est l'un des rares avec Benny Carter et Hank Jones à avoir traversé toute l'histoire du jazz d'après la seconde guerre mondiale. Si Hank Jones était seulement pianiste, Benny Carter et Frank Wess était tous les deux polyinstrumentistes. Outre les saxophones et la clarinette, Frank Wess a été l'un des tout premiers à jouer de la flûte. Formé à l'école des big bands, il est demeuré fidèle à cette tradition, même si sa carrière de leader comporte un bon nombre d'enregistrements. Mais une moitié de ceux-ci sont des collaborations avec des musiciens de sa génération ou des musiciens côtoyés dans l'orchestre de Count Basie. Il en est de même de son travail en sideman qui le confronte bien sûr à l'orchestre de Count Basie et à tous les grands orchestres, tandis qu'il est un accompagnateur recherché d'un grand nombre de chanteurs et surtout de chanteuses, de Billie Holiday à Mary Stallings et Karrin Allyson dans les années 2000.
Frank Wess est né à Kansas City, MO, le 4 janvier 1922 dans une famille où ses deux parents sont enseignants. Il débute au saxophone alto dans l'orchestre amateur de son père. Il suit des études de musique classique à Sapulpa dans l'Oklahoma. Il a alors 10 ans. Trois ans plus tard, il déménage avec sa famille à Washington D.C. Jamais, il ne sera le dentiste que ses parents avait rêvé qu'il devienne. Après son diplôme à la Dunbar High School, il passe au saxophone ténor et s'inscrit à la Howard University Music Conservatory où il a comme condisciple le pianiste Billy Taylor. Il joue alors beaucoup dans la capitale et fait un passage remarqué dans l'orchestre de Blanche Calloway.
Peu avant son 20e anniversaire, les USA entrent en guerre, et il rejoint l'orchestre de l'armée de terre (5th Army Band) où il joue du saxophone et de la clarinette. Lors de sa démobilisation, il rejoint l'orchestre de Billy Eckstine (1945-1947), où il se trouve aux côtés de Miles Davis et Art Blakey, puis l'orchestre de Lucky Millinder (1947), puis celui de R'n'B de Bull Mose Jackson (1948-1949). Mais décidé a vraiment maîtriser la flûte, il profite du GI Bill qui permet aux anciens soldats de recevoir des subsides pour reprendre leurs études, pour s'inscrire à la Modern School of Music à Washington jusqu'à l'obtention de son diplôme sur cet instrument.
En 1953 il entre dans l'orchestre de Count Basie avec lequel il restera onze ans. Il va se lier avec les musiciens de l'orchestre, en particulier avec son alter ego au saxophonr ténor, Frank Foster. La liste de ses enregistrements en sideman montre que, outre son travail avec Count Basie, Frank Wess collabore avec Joe Newman, Joe Turner, Eddie Lockjaw Davis et Thad Jones qui tous ont joué avec Basie, et même avec les musiciens de Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges et Cootie Williams. Alors que l'orchestre avait perdu les faveurs du public, petit à petit sa renommée grandit à nouveau jusqu'au fameux « Atomic Mr. Basie » et l'arrivée de Frank Wess n'est pas étrangère à ce regain de succès. Très vite, Count Basie comprend tout l'intérêt de laisser une large place à son nouveau saxophoniste qui forme une paire énergique et efficace avec Frank Foster, mais apporte également la flûte instrument jusqu'alors inconnu dans l'orchestre. C'est également un grand soliste et Count Basie n'hésite pas à le mettre en avant. Cette collaboration dure pendant onze ans durant lesquels Frank Wess est très actif participant à tous les concerts de l'orchestre, à toutes les séances d'enregistrement, ce dont témoignent les très nombreux disques avec Count Basie. Mais il ne se limite pas à l'orchestre, et ses apparitions avec d'autres formations pour des séances d'enregistrement sont extrêmement nombreuses. Il est souvent membre d'autres grands orchestres qui accompagnent des chanteuses et chanteurs ainsi qu'en témoigne son imposante discographie.
En 1964, il quitte l'orchestre de Count Basie, et commence une carrière free lance qui n'est que la continuation du travail qu'il effectuait auparavant. La collaboration des Two Frank, démarrée en grand orchestre, se poursuit en quintet. Il participe également au grand orchestre de Clark Terry, joue avec celui de Toshiko Akiyoshi et continue son travail tout terrain du Rhythm and Blues à l'accompagnement de chanteuses. Il joue ainsi aussi bien avec King Curtis que Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, Vic Dickenson, Dexter Gordon et Elvin Jones. Il est un membre permanent de l'aventure du New York Jazz Quartet avec le pianiste Roland Hanna et une rythmique qui comporte parfois George Mraz ou Ron Carter.
Il participe à la bande son de films en particulier à Everybody Says I Love You de Woody Allen avec lequel il collabore pour plusieurs films. Si les années 2000 le voient réduire son activité, il n'en reste pas moins actif jusqu'à la fin, ne délaissant la scène qu'à cause de la maladie qui l'emporte le 30 octobre 2013.
Acteur incontournable de l'histoire du jazz, Frank Wess n'a jamais fait parler de lui que par la musique. Il est l'exemple parfait de ses musiciens dont le travail souvent obscur au sein des big bands a irrigué toute l'histoire du jazz. Quasiment inventeur de la flûte dans le jazz, il a toujours travaillé pour étendre l'impact et la qualité de sa musique. Un grand musicien nous manque déjà.
