James Mtume, né James Forman, était producteur, animateur radio, chanteur, pianiste, guitariste, bassiste, batteur, percussionniste.
Fils de Jimmy Heath, il a été élevé par Bertha Forman et James Hen Gates Forman, son beau-père. Il a grandi entouré de musiciens et a débuté aux côtés d'Albert Tootie Heath, son oncle. Son premier enregistrement en leader (il en fera moins d'une dizaine) est Alkebu-lan: Land of the Blacks (avec Stanley Cowell, Gary Bartz, Joe Lee Wilson, Strata-East, 1972).

Son premier enregistrement en sideman, il le fait aux côtés de McCoy Tyner (Asante, Blue Note, 1970), puis il côtoie Freddie Hubbard, et surtout Miles Davis pour une collaboration fructueuse: On the Corner (Columbia, 1972), In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall (Columbia, 1973), Big Fun (Columbia, 1974), Get Up With It (Columbia, 1974), Dark Magus (Columbia, 1974), Agharta (Columbia, 1975), Pangaea (Columbia, 1975).
Parmi ses collaborations enregistrées, on remarque également Gato Barbieri, Art Farmer, Carlos Garnett, Albert Heath, Jimmy Heath, Eddie Henderson, Harold Land, Azar Lawrence, Lonnie Liston Smith, James Spaulding
